Spring ‘25 update part I
1) It's not ready yet! The route is a draft route in progress it's not a fully completed trail. Right now we're still looking for ground-proofers with expert skills in hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. AND - it's not supposed to be a summer or late spring route. It's designed for late fall, winter, and early spring route.
2) Our summer & fall activities We'll be continuing to meet with landowners to see about gaining access across their property. We'll continue to meet with those who want to purchase land along the trail. We're developing shelter prototypes this summer including solar panels we've been given and our goal is to test them out next winter. In November we'll be doing a group-ground proofing in the Hill Country similar to what we did for the 1st 100 miles in East Texas (the Sweaty Taste of the xTx). More details coming soon.
Big Bend Ranch State Park
By Nick Taylor
In my opinion, this portion of the xTx through Big Bend Ranch State Park will be one of the most memorable parts of the xTx. Firstly the stark beauty of the desert and the mountains is stunning. Then the raw challenge to make your way through this extreme environment will likely result in lots of Type 1, and Type 2 fun. (Type 1 is fun to do; Type 2, not so much fun to do, but more fun to talk about afterwards).
Just mountain biking the route, as I did, is a worthy challenge with the 3,000’ of climbing.
December update!
What an extraordinary time we’ve had with the launch of the xTexas Trail Project over the past six months! It’s all unfolding in such a remarkable way. In June Charlie came up with the idea of a cross-Texas trail while hiking in Lake Tahoe California, by the beginning of August I had the website designed and live and the first video created (with Charlie’s voiceover) to share the vision.
In September, Charlie’s longtime friend Pam LeBlanc wrote about this big hairy goal legacy project in The Texas Monthlyonline, and things heated up.
November update!
Happy five-month anniversary to the xTx trail idea! Can you believe Charlie came up with the idea for this big, hairy goal only in June?
I’m thrilled! 98 of you marvelous people have filled out our volunteer survey so far. Thank you! That’s more than 10% of our email newsletter list (which is now over 725 people and growing daily).
More good news is that Charlie has completed the rough-cut ground-proofing of the trail. He feels that 95% of it is good to go. 5% needs work.
Testing out the xTx brand!
Happy almost Halloween! I can’t believe it’s just been five months since I came up with this big hairy goal of a target-rich hiking, biking, and equestrian trail across the middle of Texas.
The outpouring of interest and support has been amazing; thank you all!
We’ve been a little overwhelmed with the response, so apologies for being a little slow getting back to everyone with your offers of help.
Happy October!
I’m back in Texas and back on the trail, making connections and finding opportunities!
Many of you have signed up to participate in this adventure thanks to my friend Pam LeBlanc's wonderful overview in Texas Monthly. If you haven’t read it yet, please do. That story sparked another story in The Trek as well! Momentum is growing, and more media stories are coming soon!
